Rail tie plate, or base plate, sole plate, is a steel plate fastened on rail tracks between flanged T rail and the sleepers. The tie plate holds the rail to correct gauge and increases bearing area. They are fastened to wooden ties by spikes, bolts or elastic clips through holes in the plate.
Advantages of using the rail tie plate
The using of the tie plates in the railway has the following advantages
1. They distribute the loads to a large area.
2. It helps to prevent the destruction of the sleeper due to rubbing action of the rails.
3. It helps to maintain the gauge in a better way and effectively.
4. The overall stability of the track is increased by using bearing plates.
5. When tie plates are used, the wear of spikes due to vertical vibrations of rails against them is greatly reduced.
6. They increase the life span of sleepers.
