Metre-gauge railways are narrow-gauge railways with track gauge of 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) or 1 metre, the fourth most used in the world, after 1435 mm standard rail(hereinafter referred to as quasi-gauge), 1520 mm wide gauge and 1067 mm narrow gauge. Meter -gauge rail is mainly distributed in Indochina Peninsula, east and west Africa, east South America and some parts of Europe such as Switzerland, northern Spain and most urban rail transit. France, Germany and Belgium also used meters historically, but most of them were discontinued by the middle of the 20th century.
At present, the total length of meter-gauge track laid in the world is about 95,000 km. Southeast Asia has about 14,000 kilometers, accounting for about 70% of the total railway mileage in the region, and more than 90% in indo-China Peninsula. It is an important part of southeast Asia's logistics. Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia are dominated by metre-gauge (1000 mm) railways.
