The train needs to be braked during operation, and the brake parts that directly rub against the wheels to stop the train are brake shoes.
The function of the brake shoe: when the train is running and braking, it directly rubs against the wheel to stop the train. The tile-shaped brake shoe made of cast iron or other materials hugs the wheel tread tightly when braking, and stops the wheel through friction.
Cast iron brake shoes offer a number of advantages, including:
- Their friction coefficient is almost independent from atmospheric conditions
- The material properties are independent from the Manufacturer
- They guarantee a suitable dissipation of heat generated during braking
- Small flats are grinded-down during subsequent brake applications
- Due to the constant roughening of the wheel surface a consistent adhesion level is maintained
Cast iron brake shoes can be divided into gray cast iron brake shoes, medium phosphorus cast iron brake shoes, high phosphorus cast iron brake shoes and alloy cast iron brake shoes. Gray cast iron brake shoes are suitable for railway vehicles with a running speed of 50-60 km/h and a load capacity of 30-40 tons.
Brake shoe life cycle: Generally speaking, when the thickness of the brake shoe wears down to 13mm, it must be replaced. The specific life cycle is determined by the running time and running kilometers, rather than measured by time.
